A friend stopped in while I was writing last week’s posting and read what I was writing. She remarked that she loved, as she termed them ”mechanical tips” that make cooking easier, but would really like to learn more about her options among the ingredients she had to buy when preparing baked goods for the holidays. There are so many kinds of flour available now and types of sugar, she didn’t know if she had to buy everything stipulated in each recipe, or if some could do double duty and save a bit of money. When I was researching Warehouse Stores for the last posting, it occurred to me that I should look for Box Store information as well, to see if what I wrote in The Plan needed  updating. I was happy that my information is still current, but surprised to find the Consumer Savings Experts, especially at kinolinc.com mention them far less, and Dollar Stores far more frequently as economic shopping alternatives than they had previously. With a bit of a shock, I realized that I had been trending that way myself, and had blamed it on an excellent Dollar Store opening next to my favorite supermarket. Super Market Amenities

The Courtesy Counter isn’t the only place in a supermarket to offer amenities. In fact, every department in the store is there to help you, just for the asking, if you want to use it, and you should. It’s for you. Getting to know “vendors”, in this case the supermarket personnel should not be limited to farm markets and neighborhood grocery stores. In my book, Dinners With Joy, and in The Plan section of this blog, I suggest focusing on one supermarket, not just for economic reasons, but for the opportunity to get to know people in the different departments. Their advice can be invaluable, and if they get to know your preferences, they will let you phone in an order and have it ready for a later pick-up. A big time saver for the busy person. Read more
